Pathimugam or Indian red wood soaked in water is a popular thirst quencher in Kerala. The bark of the tree is used to attain medicinal benefits. The healing water that turns light pink in color is used as a cure for kidney disorders, skin diseases, cholesterol, blood purification and diabetes. All you need to do is to boil the water with pathimugam for 2-3 minutes, strain the water and consume it with your meals or anytime of the day.
Water boiled with sappanwood shavings has antimicrobial properties. That's because the wood itself has methanol which can inhibit methicillin- resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria [1], which causes skin infections, food poisoning and joint infections.
Washing your face with sappanwood water can be an effective acne treatment. Brazilein, a red pigment found in sappanwood extract has shown to fight Propionibacterium acnes [2] that cause acne and inflammation of the eyelids

It's fine to drink regular water throughout the day when using spiced water, the two compliments each other very well. If the weather is cold you can drink the water hot straight from your flask, in warmer weather, or if your body is feeling hot, you can let it cool to room temperature first, but it will work best if it isn't completely cold.

Pathimukam or Sappanwood is a one of a thorny tree which grows up to a height of 6-9m and has a thickness of 15-25 cm in trunk diameter.
